DOG REPORT
Devil Dogs, Pound 230, recently held an Afternoon At The Races, in conjunction with our own Hernando Sand Fleas. The gala event was sold out early, and raised over $1,000. Our own Pound Keeper, Manny Miller was very instrumental in putting on this event, along with Madam Big Flea Jean Sponheim. Many of the Devil Dogs helped with the arrangements and worked in various positions to bring the party to a successful conclusion. The Fleas worked in both administrative and food services. A grand time was had by all that attended, and many left with the large number of door prizes that were provided by numerous community businesses. The Dogs look forward to making this an annual occurrence.
We would also like to welcome the brand new Hide of Fleas, who are the Auxiliary counterpart to the Devil Dogs, and is only the second Unit Hide in the state of Florida. We look forward to working with them in the future as they scratch and pester us.
Pound 230 is also very involved in the upcoming Spring Conference for the Department of Florida which is being sponsored for the first time by the Pack of Florida. The Pound is making great donations to help insure that the Spring Conference will be a howling success.
A good number of our Pups are being elevated to the advanced degree of Devil Dog in the upcoming Grand Growl at the Department Convention coming up in June in Ft. Lauderdale this year. We also have a large number of Devil Dogs advancing to the highest degree of Pedigree Devil Dog at the Supreme Growl this year at the National Convention being held in Greensboro, North Carolina in August. One of our own Pedigree Devil Dogs, Vic Voltaggio will hopefully become the National Commandant for the Marine Corps League in Greensboro, and we all support him with a hearty Woof Woof and know he will perform his duties in a very dogged fashion with hardly any growls at all.
Our 43 members of the Pound are always looking for new mutts that wish to help in keeping the traditions of the Devil Dogs alive and scratching, and if you would like to become a member, we ask that you get in touch with any current member who will be more than happy to provide you with the specifics of membership in the Fun and Honor Society of the Marine Corps League.

Who we are……. We are a fun and honor society of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary. Our purpose is to band together to pester, pinch and otherwise make the life of the Devil Dogs one of chasing, scratching, rolling and rubbing pests to get them out of their hair and hide and to create a bond of fun and comradeship between the Military Order of Devil Dogs and their Fleas.
We strive to:
We have Hides at the Unit (local), Department (State) and National levels. Upon initiation the ‘nit’ or ‘specimen’ at the Unit level will become an ‘egg’. Eggs are initiated by the Department Hides to become ‘crawlers’. The only way to achieve the level of FLEA is to be initiated at a National Convention at a Grand Scratch (we never call them meetings – they are Scratches). Eggs wear a black collar, crawlers wear a red collar and FLEAS wear a gold flea collar. All funds collected, less minimal operating costs, are donated to Veteran’s and community charities.
Our local Hide……… Our Hide of Fleas at Detachment 708 in Spring Hill is The Hernando Sand Fleas. We currently have 7 Fleas, 1 crawler and 2 Eggs in our Hide. We are actively trying to recruit more of our Auxiliary members to join us. We have not yet made any charitable donations since we are a brand new Hide and are just building our bank account. The main topic of discussion at our next Scratch will be to decide what types of fundraisers we can try to raise funds for charities.
We did get a very generous donation from our ‘brothers’, the Devil Dogs of Pound 230 at the Spring Hill Detachment. They sponsored a ‘Day at the Races’ in February which was quite successful and they very graciously donated a portion of their earnings to our new Unit Hide to help their Fleas. We are so very grateful to them. We were then able to reimburse Madam Big Flea for the monies she spent to get the Hide started. Thanks Dogs, we love ya!
